If you're after a mellow / family friendly fun & super SCENIC bike ride, can I suggest you check out the Forest Loop in the Whakarewarewa Forest.

It’s a grade 3, 1.2m wide throughout most of the trail and has so many epic view points.
If you’re going to give it a crack, start at Waipa car park and go clockwise. 99% of the trail is one way, so you can ride it safely at your own pace, knowing you won't meet any oncoming riders.

You start in the forest, and weave your way around to the Blue Lake which is stunning! and on a hot summers day, absolutely have a swim.

After this you're back on a gorgeous trail and around to the Green Lake (which is Tapu) = no swimming in their friends. But the view points are dreamy!
Then for some funnnnnn flowly chill downhill bits to the roadside. 

Note the last 6km is parallel to the state highway (on a concrete path). So if you’re riding with small humans, just keep that in mind.

But it’s super fun & you should definitely finish with your feet in a hot tub (a shinny dip is free with a purchase of *beer or pies etc* Secretspotrotorua. Or with a dreamy hot tub soak. 

Note: if you do this, you walk out of the change room in your togs between everyone using the shinny dips. A towelie would be super hand here!
